Approval has been awarded for a major road project in the UK that is expected to cost £1.2 billion. The project is being managed by National Highways and involves widening a section of the A12 in Essex along a 24km stretch.
The section of the route between Chelmsford and Colchester in Essex will be rebuilt with three lanes in either direction, instead of the two lanes in either direction at present. The work is required to boost capacity on the route, which carries heavy traffic at peak periods including a high percentage of large trucks. Congestion can be a problem at times. A new bypass stretch is also planned but approval has yet to be awarded for this project.
