Thailand is setting out a major programme for transport development works in the country. The Ministry of Transport is working on plans for 40 mega projects. Of these, 12 of the mega projects will be for road works worth a total of US$8.4 billion.
There will also be five mega rail projects and four mega projects to boost air travel.
Improving transport in and around Thailand’s capital Bangkok has been set as one of the national priorities. The city is notorious for its chronic congestion and regularly figures in surveys as one of the world’s 10 worst cities for traffic delays.
In addition, a new 2km road section is being built to link U-tapao Airport in Rayong. The project is costing $134.5 million and will also provide an improved connection between the airport and the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC).
And work is now going ahead for the widening of the 42km Ratchapruek Road. The work is due for completion in 2024 and is required to cope with the fast growing vehicle numbers in and around Pathum Thani and Nonthaburi.
The new road projects will also go some way to alleviate Thailand’s shockingly high road casualty rate, one of the worst in the world.
