Topcon is introducing a sophisticated package intended to boost construction-site safety around heavy equipment. The firm’s new Awareness System utilises a combination of AI technology and digital cameras mounted on construction vehicles. This can detect movement or obstructions in the proximity of working machines that could cause an accident or a collision.
Mark Contino is vice president of North American retail distribution at Topcon and explained that the AI system can determine whether the obstruction close to the machine is actually a person or an object.
This system delivers blind-spot detection for the operator, providing alerts when the machine comes too close to an object or person. The alerts are also sent to the cloud portal. The package features user-configurable zones of influence that can help the operator avoid collisions and can also be used to generate records for later incident analysis.
