Serbia and neighbouring Bulgaria are hoping to agree a motorway project to reduce travel time between their respective capital cities.
Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic recently met with the Bulgarian prime minister Bojko Borisov in the Bulgarian capital Sofia and discussed plans for what will be a joint motorway project, according to media reports. The goal is to cut travel time between the Serbian capital Belgrade and Sofia to three hours.
No construction value or start date was put on the project.
Currently, works are being carried out on 30km out of the total 48km of motorway that will connect the Bulgarian town of Kalotina – on the border with Serbia and 55km from Sofia – to the main European Corridor X route (Salzburg-Belgrade-Nis-Sofia-Plovdiv-Istanbul) motorway.
Meanwhile, the Serbian government recently agreed that construction of a new bridge over the Danube River in Novi Sad is of national importance and will be given priority. Project value is estimated €126.24 million.
