Towed snowplough keeps the highway clear
Pennsylvania has a new tool to keep its multi-lane highways moving this winter - a 9.14m long, tow behind snowplough. The state's transport department (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) say the tow plough will allow one truck to do the work of two. Costing between US$99,000- 106,000 each, PennDOT plans to have at least one tow plough in each of its 11 engineering districts by winter 2012.
Versatility of compact dump trucks
An example of Wacker Neuson's continuing product development is the new five model range of tracked dumpers with payload capacities spanning 500kg to 2.5tonnes. The three smaller units DT05, DT08 and DT12 are walk-behind/stand-on models with buyers of the smallest two having a choice of either petrol or diesel engines.
The bigger DT15 and DT25 are ride-on models and with the heaviest unit the operator's seat can be rotated through 180° so the driver can either look towards or away from the load when moving

The new XP2000 breaker from Promove is designed for 22 to 29tonnes carriers and its 145mm diameter tool delivers 5900 joules of energy at between 350-650 blows per minute. A flow rate of 160litres/min at 180bar is required and the breaker can work with a backpressure of up to 25bar.
Under-bridge inspection unit aids Philippines road improvements
The Philippine government's public works department believes its new Italian-sourced under bridge inspection unit will offer "complete safety" during structural investigations. The ABC 110/L from Barin, based in Cittadella, north east Italy, has a 2-Axle Volvo FLL 240 42R Chassis and occupies just one road lane, to enable continued traffic flow. The machine has a bridge barrier clearance of 2.25m, a path clearance of 2m and a horizontal outreach underbridge of 11m. With a vertical depth underbridge of 6.60m
Roadtec highlights latest developments
Roadtec is briefing show visitors about its latest product developments, including the RX-600e cold planer and the SB-2500e Shuttle Buggy material transfer vehicle. Improvements in the new e-Series of the Shuttle Buggy include more resistance to conveyor wear and better operator visibility. Power comes from a Caterpillar diesel rated at 224kW, which meets the Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB emissions legislation.
Success of innovative asphalt plants
Henan Roady Road Machinery says that its asphalt plants offer innovative design features, including a novel parallel feed system. Feed materials are weighed simultaneously to boost productivity and the plants can also be equipped with an overhead drum so as to use recycled asphalt. The firm reports success in an array of overseas markets including India, Kazakhstan, the Lebanon, Latin America, Mongolia, Nigeria, Russia, Sri Lanka, Syria, Uzbekistan and Vietnam, and intends to boost overseas sales.
The Performer improves productivity for Simex planner attachments
Simex has introduced a visual indication on its planning attachments – the Performer – which enables operators to utilise all a carrier machine’s available power while avoiding stalling. The patented system automatically resets to reflect each machine’s maximum power and, according to the company, the device typically improves production rates by 25 to 30%.
Cracking down on drug driving
New laws being established in the UK will crack down on those driving under the influence of illegal drugs. A panel of experts has been appointed by the UK Government to investigate the various issues involved. Existing laws in the UK have been described as inadequate to address the issue, prompting this move. There is a large body of research showing that illegal drug use presents a serious problem to road safety in the UK and other nations. Studies show links between drug use, criminal activity, varying v
Doosan unveils 14tonne wheeled excavator at INTERMAT
Doosan unveiled a new Stage IIIB-compliant DX140W-3 wheeled excavator on the opening day of INTERMAT.
The 14-16tonne machine’s 101kW DL06K 6-cylinder common rail diesel engine is fitted with exhaust gas recirculation and a diesel particulate filter to meet the emissions regulations. Productivity has been increased by an average of 5% while a new Lifting mode boosts lifting capacity by 15%. Hydraulic flow is 4% higher, increasing swing torque by an equal amount and bucket/arm forces by 7%.
Geosynthetic solution for ground preparation
Naue Geosynthetics says its Secugrid offers a solution for a host of ground preparation problems, and for use in reinforced retaining walls.
Secugrid is a geogrid made from extruded monolithic flat bars with welded junctions, for soil reinforcement in earth, landfill and road construction as well as in hydraulic engineering applications.
Among its benefits are said to be its high strength and low elongation thanks to the extruded elements.
"The monolithic flat bars give it a robust construction, an
INTERMAT launch for Atlas Copco Edge Drill Monitor
Atlas Copco used INTERMAT to launch the Edge Drill Monitor – an innovative system of measuring shock waves from down-the-hole drilling. Information about the hammer and the bit is displayed graphically in real time, allowing the operator to extract maximum performance and efficiency as geology changes during the drilling process, to maintain the correct degree of flushing and avoid tool breakage.
Rwanda highway Rwanda's major highway construction aids regional integration
