The European Union is making serious moves to tackle road fatalities in a bid to cut Europe's road death rates to 25,000/year by 2010. So far, measures taken have had little effect, bringing the number down by just 18% to 41,000/year.

Wirtgen's new 120F milling machine has been developed from the 100F launched late last year. Tamtron has developed a new system for managing stockpiling of bulk materials such as aggregates and other crushed products. The system is called iStock, which makes it possible to weigh each bucket load of a wheeled loader accurately. The control system works when material is loaded from stock to a truck and the system allows a company to keep precise track of material stockpiles at an operation.

A contractor in Oman is using four Hitachi excavators on a major airport expansion project. The Hitachi ZX400LCH-3 excavators are being used at Muscat International Airport by CCC & TAV joint venture and work began on the project in late 2009. French firm Bolloré has developed an innovative lithium metal polymer (LMP) battery. This is the result of a 15 year research and development process. Low levels of interest by OEMs in the new system encouraged Bolloré to launch its own electric vehicle featuring this battery. Called the Bluecar, the vehicle is now available in Paris through the autolib scheme. The aim of the project is to have 1,100 rental stations, 3,000 Bluecars and 6,600 charging stations in 47 areas in the great Paris area.
