Roads in Mexico and Chile are pioneers in the industry in receiving this certificate.
Aleatica is a pioneer in achieving this certification for multiple assets in several countries in Europe and Latin America, and the first company to obtain them for Mexico and Chile, reinforcing its global commitment to road safety and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Evidence shows that each incremental improvement in a road’s star rating, for example increasing a road from 1-star to 2-star safety, can reduce fatalities by half, and that roads rated 3 stars or more are safer, thereby saving lives and injuries.

And he added: “Today we can proudly say that 8 of our concessions are certified as achieving three stars or more for safety and that we are the first company in the sector to achieve iRAP Certification for multiple assets in multiple countries. This obliges us to continue working to ensure that at least 75% of Aleatica’s infrastructure achieves three stars or more by 2030 in line with UN Target 4”.
An independent study by Johns Hopkins University revealed that iRAP partners have saved approximately 700,000 lives and injuries from 2016 through the end of 2024 by investing in safer road projects informed by the evidence-based iRAP methodology.
Rob McInerney, chief executive officer of iRAP, said: “Tragically, more than 3,200 people lose their lives on the roads every day. Road crashes are the leading cause of death among young people. We know that road infrastructure rated 3-star or better in safety saves lives and prevents injuries, but sadly less than half of the roads assessed globally meet this standard. Aleatica’s leadership and commitment to achieving this goal is to be applauded.”
Additionally, Aleatica pledged to continue working on improving its infrastructure and therefore signed the global #SaferRoadsPledge, an initiative by iRAP, the FIA Foundation and the International Road Federation (IRF) to eliminate high-risk roads worldwide.

With the signing of this commitment, the Australian-based company joins leading road design, financing and advocacy organisations from 60 countries who have committed to safer roads and mobility by 2030.
This initiative seeks to engage organisations involved in road design and financing to commit to creating safer infrastructure to assess progress in the implementation of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 and build support for a new vision of safe and sustainable mobility. As part of this commitment, the use of road safety audits and iRAP star ratings to improve road safety and road design is recommended.
It also includes meeting the United Nations Road Safety Performance Targets 3 and 4, which include ensuring that, by 2030, all new roads are built to a 3-star standard or better for all users, and that more than 75% of trips are made on roads that meet this standard.
“We congratulate Aleatica for its road safety leadership and commitment, committing to safer roads and designs on its global network,” said Mr McInerney.
The commitments made in the #SaferRoadsPledge campaign will be presented to world leaders at the Morocco Ministerial Conference in February 2025, which will be attended by transport, mobility and health ministers from all countries to drive advocacy and investment in safer road infrastructure.
