A massive €7.6 billion budget is planned in Romania to develop the country’s transport infrastructure further. This forms part of the country’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP).

The budget will be split between road and rail improvement works, with €4.55 billion to electrify and upgrade the rail system and €3.05 billion to develop the road and highway system further. The NRRP programme has already benefited Romania with the construction of major new highways and bridges.

Key highway links to be improved include the DX12 Craiova to Pitesti Expressway, the A1 Bucharest to Nadlac Highway, the A0 Bucharest Highway and the A7 Moldovan Highway. The work will have a notable effect in Bucharest, helping to reduce the city’s severe congestion issues at peak periods.

Meanwhile, bidding interest is strong for the expressway that will link Satu Mare to Romania’s border with Hungary. The 11km link is expected to cost €147 million and should take two years to build. Contractors from Romania, Hungary, Turkey, and Ukraine are amongst the bidders.
