Romania will launch a tender worth around €6.35 billion for construction of the second segment of the A8 motorway between Targu Mures and Targu Neamt.
The segment, at nearly 160km the longest of the A8 contracts, will include 119 bridges five traffic junctions, 117 viaducts and 47 tunnels. Half the financing will come from the European Union’s Transport Programme, according to Romanian media reports, with the other half coming from the government’s budget.
The east-west A8 motorway crosses the Eastern Carpathians to connect the historical regions of Moldavia and Transylvania. The eastern section will cross the Prut River at Ungheni to reach Moldova‘s R1 highway, which further heads east towards Chișinău, Moldova’s main industrial and commercial centre. The Moldovan city of around half a million is located in the middle of the country, on the river Bîc, a tributary of the Dniester.
