Completion of the long running and much delayed New Coastal Road project for Reunion Island is finally entering its final stage. Construction work will recommence in November 2025, with the work then due for completion in 2030.
The last stretch is for the 3.1km maritime viaduct, the most complex portion of the project. This will connect La Possession with La Grande Chaloupe. The 9.6km section of the route lining Saint-Denis with La Grande is in operation already. It is raised sufficiently to allow vehicle traffic in inclement weather.
Work will be carried out to remove the overpass at La Possession, with the new interchange then being built. The project is costing some €846 million more than was originally planned. The work has been beset with delays and complexities. However, the project is much-needed as the old coastal road route suffered from frequent issues with rockfalls and was not considered safe.
