A US$6.4 billion highway project is being proposed by Peru’s Government. The 185km highway would connect the capital, Lima, with the industrial city of La Oroya. Lima will also benefit from a new ring road
The new highway project would be complex owing to the challenging topography, including 33km of tunnel stretches and 19 viaducts. Located at an altitude of 3,745m on the River Mantara, La Oroya is capital of Peru’s Yauli Province. Building the new route would cut journey times between Lima and La Oroya from six hours at present, cutting transport costs considerably.The new highway would also boost safety for users.Traffic to and from La Oroya includes a high percentage of heavy trucks as the city has a large smelter for the mining sector.
Meanwhile, the new ring road for Lima has been approved by the Ministry of Finance. The 35km ring road will be built by joint venture, Sociedad Concesionaria Anillo Vial, which comprises Ferrovial, Sacyr and Acciona. The project is expected to cost $3.4 billion and will pass through 12 of Lima’s districts although there is some resistance from locals who will lose their properties for the route.
