Widening and extension work will be carried out for Panama’s Corridor de las Playas Highway. The US$250 million package of works will be handled by Spanish contractor Grupo Puentes.
The section of the Corridor de las Playas Highway between Chorrera and Santa Cruz will be widened so that it features three lanes in either direction, helping to boost capacity and cut congestion. Much of the financing is being provided by the Banco Centroamericano de Integración Económica (BCIE). Construction work is now commencing and will take over two years to complete.
Meanwhile, a budget of $85 million has been set for the erection of 100 modular bridges by the Panama Government. The work will be carried out by a partnership, Consorcio Puentes Modulares, which was formed between Toronto Global Holdings and Constructora Urbana to handle the contract.
This deal follows an agreement for 50 modular bridges being supplied and erected across Panama by Consorcio Puentes Modulares in late 2021. The earlier arrangement saw bridges being erected in Bocas del Toro, Chiriquí, Cocle, Darien, Herrera, Los Santos, Ngabe Blugle and Veragus.
In 2018 Panama’s Ministry of Public Works also ran a tender process for the supply of 34 modular bridges.
