A new ring road is being planned for the city of Morelia in Mexico. The Second Peripheral Ring Road project is expected to cost $167.4 million. Financing for the project is being provided from the state government. The 51km ring road is expected to handle over 4,500 vehicles/day.
The new ring road will speed transport, with the Metro Morelia area having a population of around 1 million. The historic city of Morelia has a centre with many narrow streets that predate the invention of motor vehicles and traffic congestion is an issue. Allowing through traffic as well as commuter traffic to divert around the city will reduce journey times.
Morelia is the capital and largest city of the Mexican state of Michoacán. The city has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its well-preserved, historic centre.
