The new €240 million in South Germany will provide an improved transport link between Oberau and Eschenlohe. Construction is due to start for the Auerbergtunnel in mid-July 2026.
The project is being managed jointly by Germany’s state-owned road firm Autobahn GmbH and the State Building Authority in Weilheim. The project will provide a new extension to the A95 Autobahn to the South of Munich, connecting with Garmisch-Partenkirchen. In addition to the 1.9km tunnel will be a further 1.9km of road, with the new stretch totalling 3.8km.
The tunnel will feature twin tubes, with each carrying two lanes of traffic. Completion of the project is expected in 2031. The new tunnel and road stretch will reduce congestion in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen area as well as boosting traffic safety. The area suffers heavy traffic levels at present, particularly during the holiday season.
The project has increased in price since it was first planned. The work was originally expected to cost €167 million. Materials prices and the cost of labour have increased since the COVID-19 pandemic, which are major factors in the higher cost of the new tunnel link.
