A new $5 billion highway project is underway in Saudi Arabia. The route will connect Abha in Aseer Province with Jazan in Jazan Province. The 130km highway is being built by a number of Chinese firms.
The project features many technical challenges and includes building 26 civil engineering structures comprising both bridges and tunnel stretches. Once the work is complete, this will halve the travel time between Jazan and Abha.
Meanwhile, work to the 10km Taif Road extension in Riyadh that will improve the connection between Laban and Qiddiya is 65% complete. The work is intended to boost transport capacity as the route will feature four lanes in either direction and will be able to handle up to 440,000 vehicles/day.
This forms part of the $3.47 billion project titled the Main & Ring Road Axes Development Program. The project is being managed by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC).
And in Makkah, 10 new road projects with a total length of 109km have been completed. The projects cost $147.5 million in total and are intended to boost capacity and safety in the region, which has a total road network of 8,623km.
The works are amongst several projects underway in Saudi Arabia to boost transport infrastructure in the country. The construction sector is highly important to Saudi Arabia with the country also planning to hold the bauma Saudi Arabia construction machinery event in 2027.
