The project was originally due to be completed in late 2024 but this was then brought forward to the end of 2022, before a number of delays set in. The project involves widening an 84km road stretch so that it features a dual carriageway configuration with two lanes in either direction rather than a single lane in either direction.
A portion of the financing for the project is being provided via the African Development Bank (AfDB). The project is being managed by the Kenya National Highways Authority. Work started on the project in the third quarter of 2020 and the route forms part of the transport corridor linking Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, and its premier port, Mombasa, with Addis Ababa, capital of neighbouring Ethiopia.
