Construction work has been restarted on the 178km Isebania to Ahero road, connecting Kenya with Tanzania. The project is costing around US$180 million, but work ground to a halt following disputes between the Chinese contracting team and the local authorities. Following talks an agreement has been reached and the contractor, Third Engineering Bureau of China City Construction Company, is now working on the project once more.
The A1 route connects the town of Isebania, which lies on the border between Kenya and Tanzania, with the towns of Migori, Kisii and Ahero. The work is being carried out for the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and involves upgrading around 172km of the A1 route, which has suffered in the past from a lack of maintenance with several stretches in poor condition as a result. The work is being paid for by a loan to the Kenyan Government from the African Development Bank.
