Construction work is now underway for the new Makupa Bridge in Mombasa,Kenya. The bridge link is costing around US$42 million to construct, with the contract being carried out by China Communications Construction Company (CCCC). The firm was awarded the contract by Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) in late 2020.
The project calls for the construction of parallel bridges, each 20m wide. The bridges feature four traffic lanes each, as well as a rail link and pedestrian facilities. The new link will be 457m in length and will replace the old Makupa Causeway (which originally dates back to 1898), carrying the busy A109 route and linking Mombasa Island with the mainland.
The new bridge is important as Mombasa is Kenya’s main port and improving the city’s traffic flow will help boost the country’s economy as a whole. With the new bridge in place, there will be environmental benefits also as the old causeway restricts the flow of water.
