A temporary closure of the Tende Tunnel linking Italy and France is allowing work to be carried out to the crossing. Much of the road upgrade work is being carried out on the French side.
The tunnel will reopen on 25th April. The aim of the work is to boost safety on the route. Several dangerous hairpin turns on the French side in the Roya will be improved to reduce the risk of crashes. The tunnel was closed in 2013 for 12 years and only reopened in mid-2025.
The Tende Tunnel provides an important link between the Alpes-Maritimes region in France and Piedmont in Italy. The route is important to the tourist trade in both countries.
