Italy is investing €2.7 billion in upgrades to key bridge and highway connections. Driver safety will be a priority for the works, while essential maintenance will also be carried out.
The Italian Ministry of Infrastructures and Sustainable Mobility (Mims) is planning the programme of works. A budget of €1.4 billion is being used for improving safety standards on bridges and viaducts, while the remaining €1.3 billion will be used for key road maintenance works.
Meanwhile, a new 17.5km stretch of the Autosole highway is now open to traffic. The stretch includes a 10km tunnel and connects Barberino di Mugello with Firenze Nord. The tunnel is said to be one of the widest in Europe and boosts capacity on the route. The project forms part of a €1 programme to develop the Autostrada del Sole in Tuscany.
