Upgrade works are planned for the historic Golden Gate Bridge in California. The US$400 million grant is being provided by the US Department of Transportation via the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
The work will secure the bridge, which opened to traffic in the 1930s, against seismic damage. The San Francisco area is noted for its seismic activity due to its proximity to the San Andreas fault. A number of key structural components will be upgraded or replaced as required to strengthen the bridge. Congestion will also be reduced on the bridge while safety will be further improved.
The grant is being provided by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law of the Biden-Harris administration. This funding is being used to improve 10 of the most important bridge links in the US.
