Widening work is being planned in Germany for the A23 stretch of Autobahn linking the commuter town of Pinneberg with the city of Hamburg. The work will see this 16km stretch of the route being widened so that it features three lanes in either direction. The project is expected to cost €200 million and will require the construction of 25 bridges, as well as noise attenuation panelling along the urban stretch of the route to minimise traffic disturbance.
At present 80,000-90,000 vehicles/day use this stretch of the route. However, by 2030 the traffic volumes are expected to rise to 96,000 vehicles/day. Congestion is already an issue at peak periods, so the widening work will help boost capacity.
Meanwhile, has set a budget of €950 million for maintenance works to improve federal and state roads during 2021. This does not include the planned spending for highways however. During 2020 Baden-Württemberg State spent €1.4 billion on highways, federal roads and state roads.
