Funding has been secured in Germany for the construction of a new bridge in the north of the country. A package worth €421 million is being provided for the bridge work by Germany’s Federal Government.
The new Peene Bridge in Wolgast will boost transport and cut traffic delays. The Swiss contractor Implenia Civil Engineering will build the new link. The existing bascule bridge carries both road and rail connections to the island of Usedom. However, it is not able to cope with traffic demand and delays are frequent.
The bridge forms the central portion of a new 6.8km bypass project, costing a total of €500 million.
The new bridge will be 1.4km in length with 70m-high support towers and allow a clearance of 42m, so it will not require the lifting bascule design of the old bridge. Carrying the B111 over the Peenestrom, the new bypass/bridge will connect with the A20 Autobahn.
