There are concerns of a war with Russia. and that many existing road, bridges and rail links would be unable to transport heavy military vehicles such as army tanks or other equipment.
Bridges will have to be strengthened, widened or built for the four major military corridors. Around 500 separate transport infrastructure projects are being prioritised as part of the programme, which will be managed in partnership with NATO.
In the UK, there are concerns over the A303 route running between the South West and South East of England. This busy road has been upgraded to a dual carriageway along much of its length and is often used to transport army tanks and other heavy equipment from the military bases it passes. However, with the Stonehenge Bypass Tunnel project having been cancelled, there is a stretch of the route with just a single lane in either direction that suffers frequent traffic delays and this poses a distinct problem for transporting military equipment quickly.
