Costa Rica road repairs required

More road repairs are required in Costa Rica to improve the national network. A new report from Costa Rica’s Treasury Inspector's Office (CGR) criticises the country’s national road authority, Consejo Nacional de Vialidad (Conavi), for carrying out inadequate road maintenance and conservation works. According to CGR, road maintenance works carried out by Conavi scored just 64%. On a more positive note, the report said that around 77% of Costa Rica’s roads are 'in good functional and structural' condition.

More road repairs are required in Costa Rica to improve the national network. A new report from Costa Rica’s Treasury Inspector’s Office (CGR) criticises the country’s national road authority, Consejo Nacional de Vialidad ( Conavi), for carrying out inadequate road maintenance and conservation works. According to CGR, road maintenance works carried out by Conavi scored just 64%.

On a more positive note, the report said that around 77% of Costa Rica’s roads are ‘in good functional and structural’ condition. However this figure is below the minimum level recommended for the provision of adequate services. CGR has also criticised Conavi for carrying out some works that are either unsuitable or that cost too much. CGR has pointed to a survey carried out by Costa Rica’s National Laboratory for Structural Material and Models (Lanamme). This study has said that around 28% of spending for road conservation and maintenance projects do not deliver improvements to road condition. And CGR has also criticised inadequate quality control and insufficient transparency within Conavi.
