Caterpillar claims increased efficiency for its new 36tonne class excavators

Improved performance is claimed by Caterpillar for its new 36tonne class excavators, the 336 and 336 GC.

Upgrades include increase operating efficiency, lower fuel and maintenance costs, and better operator comfort compared to previous models. The new 336 model features standard integrated Cat Connect Technology and the higher power and lift capacity of the two models. This offers productivity at a competitive cost. Meanwhile the Cat 336 GC combines productivity with reduced fuel consumption and maintenance costs, for a high reliability and low cost/hour performance.

The firm claims that the new 336 has a high level of standard factory-equipped technology to boost productivity. Integrated Cat Connect Technology increases operating efficiency by up to 45% over conventional grading operations. The standard Cat Grade with 2D system provides guidance for depth, slope, and horizontal distance. The system is readily upgradable to Cat Grade with Advanced 2D or Cat Grade with 3D.

Standard Grade Assist automates boom, stick, and bucket movements so operators can stay on grade with single-lever digging. Cat Payload ensures precise load targets and loading efficiency with on-the-go weighing and real-time payload estimates. The E-fence feature prevents the excavator from moving outside operator-defined set points, such as when working beneath structures or near traffic. Cat LINK hardware and software connect jobsites to the office and provide customers with machine-critical operating information.

The new excavators are said to use less fuel than the models they are replacing, a saving of up to 15% for the 336. New Smart mode operation matches engine and hydraulic power to digging conditions. Engine speed is automatically lowered when there is no hydraulic demand to further reduce fuel usage.

The 336 GC variant weighs in at 34.6tonnes in standard specification, with power from a Cat C7.1 ACERT diesel that delivers 205kW. Meanwhile, the 336 weighs in at 36.6tonnes and is powered by a Cat C9.3B diesel, delivering 234kW.
