A new road and bridge project in Cambodia will improve transport between Kampong Thom Province and Kampong Chhang Province. The project is expected cost US$200 million and is being planned by the country’s Ministry of Public Works and Transport. Work on the project is intended to commence in 2021 and will result in the construction of a new 57km road link that will boost trade, tourism and the economic development of these neighbouring provinces. The road will link to the 3.9km bridge spanning the Tonle Sap River. Financing for the project is being secured, with the Cambodian authorities in discussions with the Chinese Government over a loan to help pay for the work.
A new 500m bridge spanning the Tonle Sap River where it passes by capital Phnom Penh was constructed in 2018. This was closed for maintenance for two weeks in July 2019. Building the bridge cost $35 million and the project was funded by the Overseas Cambodia Investment Corporation (OCIC).
