A new standard will allow the use of building information modelling (BIM) technology for bridge construction and upgrade projects in the US. This represents a significant technological step. The use of BIM in bridge building and maintenance will boost construction efficiency, reducing the time required for projects and also helping to trim costs for clients and contractors. Maintenance operations for bridges will be optimised, ensuring works are carried out more effectively.
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has adopted a US standard for bridges. This will be based on 3D model data. The document is titled “Information Delivery Manual: Guide Specification for Design to Construction Data Exchange for Highway Bridges”. This has been produced as a result of the BIM for Bridges and Structures pooled fund study. This joint project is a product of a partnership between AASHTO, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and 24 state department of transports (DOTs).
