Two bridges in West Virginia are to be upgraded and are benefiting from a Federal funding package work $65 million. The grant is being supplied by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to upgrade the Kanawha Turnpike overpass and replace the Dunbar Toll Bridge.
This grant for the work is part of the Competitive Highway Bridge Program and will pay for the West Kanawha Bridge Bundle in Kanawha County, West Virginia. However, additional Federal funding and State funding will also be required to pay for the remainder of the costs for these projects.
There are concerns over the condition of the Dunbar Toll Bridge, which is why it is having to be replaced. Meanwhile, extensive improvement work is needed to extend the working life of the Kanawha Turnpike overpass, which carries traffic over I‑64.
In addition, West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) is upgrading a 3km stretch of Jefferson Road (WV 601) from US 119 to US 60. This work is being carried out in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The project will widen Jefferson Road to five lanes, add a new roundabout at Kanawha Turnpike, and build a new overpass bridge that spans Pennsylvania Avenue, CSX Railroad, Davis Creek and Kanawha Turnpike.
