Construction work is underway for the $509 million highway project linking capital Abuja with the northern cities of Kaduna and Kano. The route is around 700km in length. The Nigerian Ministry of Works is requiring the contractors involved in the project to agree to meet the schedule for the work. Section 1, Section 2 and Section 3 should be completed within 14 months according to the schedule from the Ministry of Works. The link will boost transport and economic development for Northern Nigeria.
Meanwhile, over $10 million has been spent on a section of the coastal road linking Lagos with Calabar. A stretch of the alignment had to be moved due to the discovery of a waste dump dating back 50 years that was 10m deep by 2km in length. Stabilisation work also had to be carried out by the contractor, Hitech Construction Company, to ensure that the base would be able to carry the road. So far work for 35km of the 750km route has been completed, with construction for section 1, connecting with Lagos, due for completion in May 2026.
