Costing US$3.9 billion, the massive Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion project in Virginia faces additional delays. This is one of the largest transport infrastructure projects in the US at present.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is managing the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion project. And VDOT has commented that the delays can be attributed to “Unforeseen cost and schedule impacts”.

The opening of the link will now be delayed until February 2027. Two tunnels measuring 13.7m in diameter and 2.3km in length will help improve transport for drivers in the area, which has seen a major increase in population and vehicle journeys.

The project includes a 16km stretch of the I-64 route being widened, which will boost capacity and cut congestion. Additional lanes will be added in either direction along the route while two new bridges will be added and others replaced, while several key junctions will be upgraded.
