The US$153.2 million upgrade to New Zealand’s State Highway 6/6A in Queenstown is now underway. Around 40,000 vehicles/day use the Frankton intersection and traffic delays are common at peak periods.
The improvement work now underway will help cut congestion and improve traffic flow. The work will take an estimated 36 months and includes building a new roundabout near Howards Drive and installing traffic control technology as well as new lights at the junction for the Events Centre.
The project is being overseen by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA). Also involved in the project are Queenstown Lakes District Council, Downer New Zealand, Fulton Hogan, WSP, and Beca.The New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi says it is delivering improvements to SH6 and SH6A to support and efficient and reliable transport network to address growth in Queenstown.
