On October 1st 2025, the Pennsylvania Turnpike celebrated its 85th anniversary while the Ohio Turnpike celebrated its 70th anniversary. The Pennsylvania Turnpike is regarded as the first superhighway for the US and originally measured 256km but has grown to 904km.
Both routes helped transform transport in these states and both highways predate the commencement of construction work for the US Interstate system, which began in 1956.
Both highways have embraced new technology such as open road rolling and have benefited from the use of new traffic control technology. The Pennsylvania Turnpike is likely to be the first sustainable highway in the US when it celebrates its centenary in 2040, featuring wireless charging and the use of renewable energy.
