Construction work is due to start on the expressway project connecting Busega with Mpigi in Uganda. The contract was awarded to the Chinese construction firms China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and China Railway 19th Bureau Group Company Limited. The companies have established a joint venture partnership to handle the work. The project is costing around US$147 million and the 24km expressway should take around three years to build. A loan from the African Development Bank is helping to pay for the work.
The procurement process for the land along the alignment is currently underway. The land for around 11km of the route has already been acquired. The expressway will feature two lanes in either direction and the project, which forms part of the Kampala to Masaka route, was originally put forward around eight years ago. The work was awarded to another contractor earlier but this deal was cancelled in 2018 over a number of irregularities in the paperwork submitted by the firm.
