The new M81 expressway in Bangkok is expected to help tackle the city’s chronic traffic congestion when it finally opens traffic at the end of 2025. A trial of the 96km route has been carried out to determine how it will perform when fully complete.
Bangkok regularly figures in lists as being one of the world’s top 10 cities for traffic congestion and delays. This new route is likely to help cut journey times and soothe the tempers of those drivers regularly stuck in long traffic jams amidst slow moving vehicles at present.
The project has been managed by the Department of Highways and the route runs from Bang Yai in Nonthaburi to Kanchanaburi. The route will features sophisticated traffic management technology with M-Flow automatic toll collection, as well as systems for speed detection. The road is expected to handle from 35,000-40,000 vehicles/day when fully commissioned.
