Spain will invest €1.629 billion for upgrading 5,000km of state roads between 2027 and 2031. The tender process for the maintenance and upgrade works will be opened during 2026. A priority will be given to preventative maintenance measures for the State Road Network, with the programme of works being managed by Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.
Extensive analysis of road quality will be carried out to assess the type of work required and to highlight stretches of roads that will need to be prioritised for urgent maintenance and upgrade works. The work will go some way to address the estimated €13 billion road deficit previously reported for Spain’s road improvement works.
Meanwhile, there are also plans to improve the A-62 motorway connecting Simancas and Tordesillas in Valladolid. The project is expected to cost €125.5 million. This stretch of road features two lanes in either direction at present and will be widened so that it features three lanes in either direction. Existing junctions along this stretch will also have to be remodelled to take account of the widening work. The project will improve transport connections between Valladolid and Spain’s capital, Madrid.
