Reduced pollution with locally sourced materials

Robert Petts provides a practical example of gTKP at work. There is a substantial requirement for a range of sealers and binders in the global road infrastructure sector. The principal need is for the construction and maintenance of road surfaces and pavements. Globally, more than 100 million tonnes of bitumen are produced each year, mostly for use in the road sector.

Successful pavement maintenance

This is the final section of a three-part series about preventive maintenance for pavements. Written by Alan S. Kercher, P.E., Kercher Engineering, Inc We practice preventive maintenance in our everyday lives and possibly with agency equipment such as dump trucks and backhoes, but when it comes to maintaining our roadways, most agencies will always defer repairs until the pavements have failed, resulting in very expensive repairs. This article will provide some guidance to help an agency make the switch fr

Buckets of innovation

The lower angle of Caterpillar Work Tools’ new line of buckets for the E-series Hydraulic Excavators are said to concentrate the power of the machine across a smaller surface, offering less resistance to the material flow into and around the bucket resulting in a smoother and faster dig cycle. In addition, ‘Tip forward’ - the tip position that opens up the mouth of the bucket and lengthens the floor - has been moved towards the operator. This is said to improve both material flow into the bucket and visibi

Fayat reveals Compact asphalt plant at Intermat

Fayat’s development of the Compact asphalt mixing plant is to create a continuous flow of multipurpose product, including cold, warm and hot mix. Optimum energy management for mixing aggregates in the most effective way while the bitumen is hydrophobic is one criteria that the new plant offers, along with the ability to recycle materials according to typology. The feed is conventional and either into the tube via the ring, or into the continuous mixer, or both, for recycled materials. Bitumen is introduced

A history lesson in private public partnerships

Michel Démarre gives some historical insights into public-private partnerships conceived to implement urban infrastructure projects, a concept that surprisingly dates back to as early as the 13th century! All over the world today, the role of public authorities in the process of planning and, in most cases, designing, financing and procuring urban roads is paramount. Even for modifications to existing roads, decisions are made by these public authorities (usually after due consultation with the population)
