A series of road projects will move ahead in Romania. The works will expand and improve Romania’s network.

The €1.32 billion Focsani-Bacau motorway project is for a 96km stretch of road, with the work being carried out in three phases over 2 ½ years.

Bidding is strong for Section 4 of the Sibiu-Fagaras Motorway project. The work is for a 16.3km stretch of road connecting Sambata de Sus and the DN1 route. The design and build project is worth €235.6 million and should take four years to carry out.

The contract for Lot 1 of Bucharest’s A0 Nord Highway has been awarded to a joint venture partnership. The €165.5 million deal is for a 17.5km section of road and will take just under three years to build. Much of the financing is being supplied by the EU.

A budget of €247.5 million will pay for the development of 3,000km of cycling facilities. This forms part of Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The aim of the work is to help boost tourism.

Romania still has to complete its programme of road network improvements. According to the Pro Infrastructura Association, a total of 994.6km of highway and expressway routes will be in use in Romania before the start of 2023. The tender processes are in hand currently for a further 444km of highways. These works are worth an estimated e1.33 billion. However, a further 900km of highways will have to be constructed in Romania over the coming decade according to the Pro Infrastructura Association.
