Austria is to invest €1 billion in its road network in 2014, with a further €1.3 billion investment in 2015 funded by drivers and the transport industry. Of these sums, 60% will be spent on new construction projects, while 40% will be used for maintenance works.

A consortium has won a key construction and concession contract in Russia for a stretch of the Moscow-St Petersburg highway. The construction consortium comprises contractor Vinci and Russian Bank VTB. The deal involves around US$1.7 billion of public financing for the construction phase and some $983 million for operation for the period of the contract. Italian civil engineering group Astaldi is expecting to obtain a €1.7 billion contract from Russia that would see them build a 140km stretch of the Moscow-St Petersburg motorway. Astaldi chairman Paolo Astaldi said that the deal for lots seven and eight of the motorway is “probable”. Astaldi is in a consortium with Turkish partner Ictas, with which it has already banked deals in Russia. The contract will be awarded by the motorway concessionaires, VTB and Vinci.

The Peruvian government has announced that the US$182 million construction of a road to link Tacna (Peru) with La Paz (Bolivia), via Collpa, will begin in 2015. This new road will benefit more than 268,000 people living in the south of Peru.

Paraguay's Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) has requested a US$289.45 million donation from the Mercosur Structural Convergence Fund (Focem) for the second stage of the Costanera road project (Costanera II) and a second bridge connecting the country to Brazil. Of this total, around $117.44 million will be allocated to works on Costanera II. The Australian government is providingUS$1.39 billion (AUD 1.5 billion) to finance the second phase of Victoria state’s 18km long East West Link road project. According to a statement, the infusion will allow both stages to be built simultaneously. As a result, the project could be completed by 2023. The second stage of the road project will link the Western Ring Road to the eastern section, connecting CityLink and the Eastern Freeway.

A Serbian daily newspaper has reported that Zezelj road and railway bridge, over the Danube river by the city of Novi Sad, is still in need of repairs, more than 15 years after NATO bombs destroyed it.

The consortium building Nigeria’s key Second Niger River Crossing, close to the city of Onitsha, says that the bridge will be ready for traffic on time, according to the contract requirements. The consortium is headed by German owned contractor Julius Berger Nigeria and the PPP package has been set out as a 25 year concession contract. The project is costing close to US$700 million to construct and includes the bridge itself as well as associated road and rail connections as the structure is being designed

The National Highways Authority of India has awarded a US$529.67 million (INR 32 billion) Yedeshi-Aurangabad NH21 four-lane highway project in India to India-based IRB Infrastructure Developers (IRB Infrastructure). With a concession period of 26 years, the project is scheduled for completion in 910 days.
