Work is now commencing on widening a stretch of the A3 Autobahn where it passes through the Bavarian city of Regensburg. The 15km section of the A3 will be widened from its present two lanes to three lanes. The project is costing €270 million and will be carried out on the section from the junction between the A3 and B8 at Rosenhof to the east of Regensburg and running 15km westwards, past the junction with the A93 Autobahn route that connects with the A9 and Munich to the south. This work is needed as the section of the A3 becomes highly congested at peak periods, leading to long traffic delays. The A3 carries a high percentage of truck traffic along this stretch and in either direction. The project is expected to take until 2024 to complete.
The A3 widening project is the first of several being carried out in Bavaria, following a new focus on road works by the state’s Transport Ministry. In 2017 the Federal Transport Ministry provided a budget of €1.85 billion for work to the Autobahn network and has said it will provide €1.8 billion for 2018. Additional funding may also be provided. In addition to the A3 upgrade, work is planned to improve the A73 from Nuremberg-Hafen-Ost and Nuremberg south and the Starnberg relief tunnel on the B2.
