Open interfaces with Topcon

Data, connectivity and technologies are revolutionising the construction industry and the importance of open interfaces and standardised protocols is becoming increasingly clear. But construction companies struggle with data and software solutions that do not talk to each other. Topcon Positioning Systems has focused for decades on openness, vendor-independent solutions and the use of standards such as ISO 15143-3 and ISO 15143-4, as well as MiC 4.0. These are central components of the company's development philosophy.

Open interfaces with Topcon

Topcon Positioning Systems has always stood for open interfaces without limiting itself to proprietary solutions. This builds trust with customers but also establishes the company as a pioneer in the industry. Open interfaces allow partners and customers to extend their existing systems while benefiting from Topcon’s advanced solutions. This not only increases the acceptance of Topcon products but also creates added value for all parties involved.

Application Programming Interface – API

A well-developed API (application programming interface) enables communication between different software solutions. Topcon uses this concept to make work easier for customers by providing seamless data integrations and automation tools. Whether it is integrating solutions with existing fleet or site management services or combining survey data from different sources, APIs form the central backbone. Topcon can integrate any third-party solutions if they follow these standards.

The ISO 15143-3 standard enables seamless communication by standardising telematics data exchange across construction machinery. Topcon’s Tierra Blend+ telematics service fully complies with it. This standard enhances transparency, compatibility and efficiency, ensuring consistent performance across diverse systems.

ISO 15143-4 extension: worksite topographical data

The newly introduced ISO 15143-4 extends these standards to data communication specifically for construction-site operations and focuses on worksite topographical data. This evolution standardises the exchange of design and as-built data between machines, controls and site-management services, including solutions such as Topcon’s Sitelink3D. Evolution is critical for today’s increasingly digital and networked construction workflows and for simplifying the challenges facing construction companies. With the ability to efficiently coordinate different machines and control systems on the same site, construction managers can streamline processes, reduce downtime and improve overall productivity and accuracy.

The introduction of ISO 15143-4 is more than just a technical milestone; it marks a shift in the way the industry approaches its operations. By enabling a mixed worksite where machines and systems share information, the standard paves the way for smarter, more integrated projects. This new level of collaboration fosters innovation and pushes the boundaries of what is possible in site management and machine control. Sitelink3D users benefit from increased compatibility, enhanced data sharing, and the ability to integrate disparate equipment and systems into a unified workflow for more efficient, accurate and connected construction sites.

Topcon – an active member of MiC 4.0

As an active member of MiC 4.0 (Machines in Construction 4.0), a European initiative to standardise interfaces across the construction industry, Topcon is committed to developing common standards to unify processes and drive digitalisation. The goal is to create a common digital language for the entire construction process that enables cross-manufacturer collaboration and promotes innovation. MiC 4.0 aims to develop common digital standards and interfaces that facilitate the exchange of data between machines and systems from different manufacturers.

For Topcon, participating in MiC 4.0 means not only contributing to the evolution of the industry, but also advancing the firm’s vision of open and standardised solutions.

Open interfaces allow customers to integrate existing systems with Topcon technologies. This makes it easier to get started and lowers the barrier to adopting new technologies. Customers appreciate this flexibility because they are not dependent on a single vendor. Interoperability is becoming increasingly important as the construction industry moves towards digitalisation and automation. Standardised data enables managers to optimise machine operation, track construction progress and better plan processes. This saves time, reduces costs and increases efficiency.

The future of construction requires cooperation

Topcon Positioning Systems is setting new benchmarks for the industry with its openness and use of standards. By participating in initiatives such as MiC 4.0 and supporting ISO standards, Topcon is actively shaping the digitalisation of the construction industry. This not only demonstrates the commitment to innovation, but also to the needs of customers.
