Nepal’s first road tunnel will be opening in July 2026, having cost around $145 million to construct. The new 2.7km link will speed traffic between Nagdhunga-Sisnekhola, improving transport through the Kathmandu Valley.
Congestion will be cut and journey times will be improved. Construction work commenced on the tunnel in 2019 but the completion date was extended due to a series of reasons.
The new tunnel will provide a faster and safer route than the existing pass with its long ascent and descent. The tunnel is expected to carry around 8,800 vehicles/day. Revenue from the tolls will be used to maintain the link.
