Widening work is being carried out for the heavily congested A99 that runs around the eastern side of Munich. The route is being upgraded and will feature four lanes in either direction once complete. The A99 connects with the A8 to the North West and South East of Munich, as well as the A94 to the East of the city and A92 to the North. In addition, the A99 provides an important link for Munich Airport, one of the largest in Germany.
At peak periods, the A99 is notorious for heavy traffic and drivers using the route regularly suffer long delays around Munich. Upgrading the route to four lanes in either direction will help to reduce the delays and also provide sufficient capacity for the expected 20% increase in traffic on the A99 and A94 by 2035. Upgrading of the München-Ost interchange will commence in 2032 and is expected to take until 2035 to complete.
