Just the right task for Liebherr’s hydraulic excavators. Contractor Kemna Bau Andreae relied on six rented Liebherr machines: four wheeled excavators of the A 918, A 918 Compact and A 920 models as well two R 920 Compact crawler excavators.
Once the old concrete surface had been milled away, the four mobile excavators and two crawler excavators came into play. First, hydraulic hammers broke out damaged concrete patches before the taxiway was excavated and an asphalt base layer was applied. This created the basis for the SAMI layer (Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer) – a type of “stress-relieving intermediate layer” – before the asphalt surface course was finally installed.
The Liebherr R 920 Compact crawler excavator combines the characteristics of a standard crawler excavator, such as high performance and versatility, with the advantages of a compact wheeled excavator. The powerful diesel engine has a performance of 110kW and meets the requirements of exhaust emission stage V.

With a low tail-swing radius of just 1,850mm, it can be used on inner-city construction sites. The compact dimensions of the R 920 Compact and its low operating mass of just 19 tonnes ensure high mobility and simple, fast transport between different operating locations.
Liebherr offers an extensive portfolio of suitable attachments. The Liebherr TR25 Tiltrotator was used during the taxiway renovation. Its advantage is its pivoting angle of 2 x 50° and 360° rotation when working at close range. Various backhoe and ditch-cleaning buckets were also used to carry out the renovation work. Thanks to the fully automatic LIKUFIX quick-coupling systems, a safe and quick replacement was possible directly from the operator’s cab.
