The new Abuna bridge in Brazil is now open to traffic and will improve transport between Rondonia State and Acre State. The project is of note as it means that the west of the country now has a direct road connection to the rest of Brazil.
Building the bridge took seven years to complete and the work cost nearly US$30.6 million. However, with the 1.5km bridge now in use drivers will no longer to wait in queues for up to several hours to use the ferries that formerly provided the crossing over the Madeira River.
