A Chinese construction company has been awarded an important road project in Kenya. The US$166.5 million package of works was awarded by the Kenya National Highways Authority(Kenha) to China Communication Construction Company (CCCC).
The project is for work on the 453km route connecting Kenya’s Lamu Port with South Sudan and Ethiopia by road. Building this new road link is of particular important for landlocked South Sudan by providing access to a port. The work will form part of the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport (LAPPSET) Road Project Network.
Building the LAPPSET project includes a 113km road linking Hindi, Bodhei, Basuba and Kiunga and a 257km stretch of the road linking Lamu Ijara and Garissa. Construction of the project is expected to take two years and will help develop trade and transport for East Africa, providing a much needed economic boost to the region.
