Major repairs and maintenance works are required in Japan to address the issue of poor road conditions. A new national survey has highlighted the problem of dilapidated highway stretches in Japan. The survey focussed on safety and identified 500km of important routes that are in need of maintenance and repair works.
Discussions are being held between the Japanese Government and the six highway tolling firms in the country to work out a suitable solution to the issue. Extensions to concession periods have been proposed as one way of funding the necessary works, which could cost as US$11.55 billion at current prices.
