An online package of new resources to support 5-star road assessment progammes designed to eliminate high-risk roads is now available globally.

Information can be found on the website of the London-based group iRAP – International Road Assessment Programme. The launch comes on the back of the recent United Nations High-level Meeting of Road Safety in New York City and as countries embrace implementation of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for safer national roads that save lives.

The resources will help develop activities such as engagement and coordination of all stakeholders, the creation of precise assessments, development of policies for safer roads, investment by third parties and also how to measure success of the process.

It offers guidance on how to develop an effective programme and includes 140 award-winning examples, templates and downloadable materials, drawn from the best practice of partners world-wide.

The resources are the outcome of the three-year 5-Star Global Connections Initiative, funded by FedEx.

“Resources can be limited, especially in low- and middle-income countries where 90% of road crashes occur,” said Judy Williams, iRAP’s global programme manager. “This resource places the best tools and knowledge at the fingertips of every partner in the world for 5-star programme results.”

iRAP is a registered charity that focusses on preventing the more than 3,500 road deaths that occur every day worldwide. It is the global umbrella organisation for many local road assessment programmes championing national and regional interests including EuroRAP, AusRAP, usRAP, KiwiRAP, ChinaRAP, IndiaRAP, BrazilRAP, SARAP, ThaiRAP and MyRAP. In addition, RAP activity is underway in more than 100 countries with recognised success.
