Construction work is complete for the IKN Section 3A Karangjoang-KKT Kariangau toll road. The work has been carried out by PT Hutama Karya and this new road stretch links with the Balikpapan-Samarinda Toll Road.
Building the IKN Section 3A Karangjoang-KKT Kariangau toll road was not straightforward as the work was complex. The route features three lanes and includes four overpasses, and three bridges crossing the Wain River. Around 4km of the route is elevated, with around 4.2km at grade. Despite the complexity of the work for this stretch, it was completed ahead of the December 2025 schedule.
Although the construction work for this stretch is finished, it will not open fully as a tolled route for traffic until the entire IKN Toll Road network (Sections 1A-6C) is complete in 2028. The road section will undergo operational trials initially. Once the IKN Toll Road network is in use, it will reduce journey times between Balikpapan and IKN from 2-3 hours at present to just 1 hour.
