The 10.3km litomysl-Janov section of the D35 motorway in the Czech Republic has been granted a go-ahead permit by the country’s transport ministry.

Work is expected to start on the section, essentially a bypass of the town of Litomysl, next year at an estimated cost of nearly €178 million.

Once all 260km of the D35 motorway – formerly Expressway R35 – are completed it will be the second longest highway in the Czech Republic, running from Úlibice to the D1 at the town of Lipník nad Bečvou. It is designed to be an alternative route to the D1 motorway between Prague and Olomouc and Ostrava.

According to an April 2021 document from the ministry of transport, the D35 is part of the Europe’s TEN-T comprehensive road network. There will also be an emphasis on work being carried out under public-private partnership contracts.

In terms of construction complexity, the most complex structure is the Janov interchange at the end of the section. Construction will also include several bridges both on the main route across lesser class roads. The total length of the bridge structures will not exceed 350 meters. There will also be around 2kmk of noise barriers when the route runs close to housing.
